Commercial photography is photography made or licensed for the purpose of selling a product, service or idea where fine-art photography is created as an end in itself.

Commercial photography, therefore has a commercial client by definition. The photographers job is to consult with the commercial client and help them achieve the photography they need. Some clients know exactly what sort of commercial photography they want, others need advising on what the options are. For example, commercial portraits are affected by the environment in which they are shot in. Shot in an office says one thing whilst shot against an interesting background or plain background (see example) says another.

Commercial photography commissions recently have included a company that very specifically wanted to look and be represented like their customers. I was asked to shoot commercial portraits of their staff and their customers and the images were used on their website to give the "we are you" message. www.itlab.co.uk

They have a job to do and should represent the clients commercial identity and the individuals role at work.
