Commercial photography is photography made or licensed for the purpose of selling a product, service or idea.
Many people ask me: What gear do I need to get into commercial photography and how do I start my business? Commercial photography is extreemly varied and my recommendations would be based on the best tools for the job. Versatile, light equipment that is built well and extremely reliable is what I would recommend. Also the best lenses you can afford. A simple light flash system - such as the nikon i-ttl - is very desirable when the situation does not permit a full large flash system. E.G. when shooting in a busy kitchen. (NB. When in a busy working commercial kitchen there is absolutely no where to stand that is not in the way!!) Check out these images shot as part of an advertorial for Tilda rice. These were all shot using the Nikon flash i-ttl and a very light, photography light stand from Jessops for the flash to sit on to gove modelling light. The flash photography was achieved with a Nikon 800 on camera in commander mode and a Nikon SB600 in slave mode. (Always use freshly charged batteries as they will run down quite quickly and changing them during a commercial job takes time.!)
There were 12 portraits of chefs in this commercial photography commission and they all had to be different! It is not easy to find 12 photogenc different situations that a chef can do! Here is a link to the end client.http://www.tilda.com

Commercial photography example 09 © Chris Gloag 2007 This portraits were of a sushi chef and a sauce specialist. The colour scheme of the photographs was orange and green (Kitchens tend to be all grey and white and can be quite dull to look at unless they have lots of natural light burning in.) So I lit fitted a couple of warm up and fluorescent gels over the flashes. . |
